"I Love Us" – 36 x 48" mixed media on canvas

This portrait exemplifies the artist's signature style: hand-torn paper collage as underpainting, with oil paint applied as a final step to refine features and create depth and movement. The subject is Juanta, a woman with a deep love of her Black people, Black culture, and Black heritage. The artist's largest piece yet, it is a perfect match for the bold spirit of its subject. "I Love Us" is a phrase Juanta uses as she highlights achievements — or simply the humanity — of the Black and Brown community, and her expression here captures that sentiment exactly.

The hair and eyes received special attention. Her long, voluminous curls were carefully rendered with a cacophony of colors and shapes to convey their liveliness and movement. Her eyes — a beautiful light golden brown — are enhanced not only by the layered paper beneath, but also by transparent gold paint applied over it, capturing some of the magic present there.
