The Ocean Always Restores Me | Cape Coast, Ghana

24 x 36” Mixed media on canvas — torn magazine collage, oil paint, metal leaf

Created as part of the Community Portraits project, this work was inspired by a photograph submitted by the subject herself, captured on the coast of Ghana the morning after visiting Cape Coast Castle — where millions of enslaved Africans passed through the Door of No Return before crossing these same waters. She stands at the shoreline, processing the unprocessable.

Her own words frame the piece: "The ocean always restores me — steady, yet random; calming yet turbulent; insightful and mysterious." She was there with Yemanjá, Orisha of the sea and mother of waters, who has held the grief of the Middle Passage for centuries and never let go.

The work was built through a layered process that mirrors the layered nature of the moment. First, an underpainting composed entirely of collage — torn fragments of printed imagery forming both the turbulent coastal landscape and the subject's face, her skin assembled from color and pattern, memory and material. Then oil paint added to refine, to breathe, to resolve. Finally, metal leaf on the moon and in scattered fragments of the sky — luminous, mirrored, deliberate — because these are the symbols of Yemanjá herself: the moon she rules, the mirror-bright water that carries her presence. She is not a metaphor in this piece. She is here.
