"Peace Piece" is a 48 × 48" mixed media portrait of Chris Thomas, founder of Your Passion 1st, a Chicago-area nonprofit dedicated to mentoring youth and helping young adults find their way into the workforce through passion-driven coaching and community engagement.

This is the artist's largest work to date — remarkable not only in scale but in the ambition of its composition, which brings together seven faces in a single, unified vision. Chris himself insisted that the young people from a recent international trip be included alongside him, and their presence transforms this from a traditional portrait into something more communal and alive.

Chris anchors the foreground with commanding detail, while the young adults surrounding him are rendered with intentional abstraction — becoming more abstracted the further they recede into space with the young woman at center and closest to the front being the most resolved of the group. It is her peace sign, echoed by the young woman in the far background, that gives this work its title. Peace Piece — a pun that honors both the gesture of peace and the hundreds of hand-torn paper pieces that form every face, every shadow, every fold of fabric, finished with a refinement layer of oil paint.

"Peace Piece" is part of the artist's Portraits of Liberation, Transformation, and Imagination series — an ongoing body of work that turns its lens on members of her community as they navigate, resist, and reimagine this particular moment in American history.
