Cardinals are abundant in my corner of the world and I’m so glad they are.  I love the vibrant color that the male birds have, ready show off to their potential mates and to us humans as well.  As the days grow colder and shorter it’s a treat to see cardinals in the early morning when the sun hasn’t quite made its way up yet. When there is fresh snow on the branches, it’s even more of a delight.  I painted this acrylic on canvas piece as a fantasy of a winter morning with the light blue confetti of the dawn sky breaking through the inky dark sky, and with holiday lights and snowflakes peppering the composition.  The cardinal is holding our attention, and he is encircled by the bright pops of color all around.  This is a fun and cozy scene, one that you might glimpse from your window as you rise early to make your morning tea or coffee, only to be surprised to see that a layer of snow was laid down overnight and the cardinal is here to tell you all about it.

I'm constantly captivated by the cardinals in my Chicago neighborhood, especially when winter cloaks everything in silence. In Snowy Dawn Cardinal, I've captured that singular moment—an early morning when dawn's blue fingers sift through the night's darkness, and the world is hushed except for the snow's crunch. This artwork—acrylic on canvas—melds the icy blues of dawn with the rich, fiery red of the cardinal amidst a dance of holiday lights and gentle snowflakes. Each stroke celebrates the vibrance that nature retains in the harshest of seasons, an intimate moment akin to glimpsing out your window while the coffee brews, only to discover a fresh snowy blanket and our red-feathered herald announcing the day.
