This portrait is inspired by a photo submitted by a remarkable member of my community—someone known for her leadership, visibility, and public presence. In the image she shared, however, she isn’t performing strength; she’s wrapped in a red hoodie, partially turned away, hand lifted as if deciding how much of herself to reveal.

That moment of choosing rest while still meeting the world with honesty became the emotional anchor of this piece for me.

Using hundreds of torn paper fragments and layers of oil paint, I built the portrait with the sense of accumulated memory and the resilience that threads through her reflection on her own journey. The red hoodie feels like both armor and tenderness. Her gaze meets the viewer with the steadiness of someone who believes in the power of small acts, rippling outward.

Portraits of Liberation, Transformation & Imagination is my ongoing project honoring real people who are navigating transformation and imagining new futures shaped by community, creativity, and hope. This piece makes space for the part of strength that learns to rest, trusts the process, and breathes.
